ASP Fellowship Awards Banquet

The year of 2012 is already proving to be quite the busy one! When I am not creating artwork and capturing moments of time through my photographic lens, I am in and out of planes trains and automobiles for teaching, consulting and attending awards banquets! It is fast and furious and an absolute dream to live!

Just last week I returned from the American Society of Photographers National Convention in New Orleans where the Fellowship banquet is held. The Fellowship degree is the highest honor achievable to any photographer and is highly sought after. To this day, there are only 111 ASP fellows worldwide, some of who have since passed. This year, I (a Fellow since 2008) was asked to award the Fellowship degree to the most recent photographer (one of my dearest friends and esteemed colleagues- William Branson III) to earn it. It is such an honor to be asked, and I am so glad to be such an impactful piece of this talented man's career.

Sweet, Spunky Personality

What a lovely time we had creating this beautiful image. This beautiful child's personality is whimsically fun and spunky and it was mom and dad's request that these sweet personality traits be captured in portrait. She has so much fun and spunk to share that capturing it was only natural. We all decided that this image was our very favorite of the day and would be a perfect addition to the niche. Personally, the character of her hand holding her hair just out of the breeze and the pop of color from the flower she picked complete the story of her personality. It just wouldn't have been the same without it.

When we went to their beautiful home to deliver their daughter's portrait, she was sure to show us the space in her mouth from the teeth she has lost since we last saw her. I am just so glad we were able to capture her youthful facial features before her big girl teeth grew in.

Captivating Individuality

{Individuality brings out the captivating differences in each of their wonderful children's persona's...}

Art is not only a large part of Dr. Michael and Andrea Bortner's personal style, it also brings out the captivating differences in each of their wonderful children's individual persona's. Brenna, the Bortner's daughter, was the first of the two camera studies and since she adores her cat, the small fluffy creature came along for the ride. We may just start referring to ourselves as the pet whisperers, just take a look at that content fluffy face!

When it came time for the Bortner's son Dolan's camera study, the beach was unanimously decided to be most appropriate due to their current residence's beachy location.

The combination of the two very different style paintings displayed so near to each other is such a fresh look and very fitting to the Bortner's beautiful home.

Southern Classic

{A classic southern} art piece is a portrait of a child capturing not only their aesthetic beauty, but also a bit about the child’s personality. Anna Katherine, daughter of Gregory and Keshea Harman is the subject in this stunning portrait. Keshea contacted us to create a portrait  of their daughter which would be prominently displayed (along with her brother’s... in a few years) in their home.

Lesa and I love working on the beach. It is where we live and with families moving all the time, it is nice to show a beautiful piece of what we are so priveledged to call “home”. Anna Katherine was such a fun young lady to photograph, as she had the sweetest personality along with classic beauty.

A Warm Welcome

{“With all of us being at the
front of our home,
it feels as though we are welcoming everyone inside.”}

In the design process of Tiffany and John Donovan's family portrait, an inquiry surfaced about the potential of photographing on location at their home. Naturally we took a visit, and discovered, as you can see, that their home is just beautiful! Of course it would be stunning showcased in a portrait. The Donovans prompted the "on location" idea simply due to the fact that they thought it may mean a little something extra if their family's home, build by John himself, was showcased in their portrait. We absolutely agreed and quickly worked out the rest of the details from there. Being that we were already at their home, we were able to see first hand where their piece of art would eventually hang.

This made those last few details such as clothing choices and composition a smooth process. When we visited with Tiffany a little while after their portrait had been hung in their front room, she stated with much joy, "I love having the portrait at the entrance of our home and having it hanging right where it can be seen. With all of us being at the entrance of our home, it feels as though we are welcoming everyone inside."

Backyard Bliss

During the Holiday Season, Tammy Saladino was opening her and Dr. Saladino's mail when one piece in particular caught her eye. It was a beautiful Christmas card adorned with an image created by none other than yours truly. She immediately fell in love with the style and wanted one of her own family. When we went on location to the Saladino's home, I did a little exploring in their beautiful backyard (the Saladino children's favorite play place).

The colors would be perfect for a wall portrait to be placed in their dining room, and what better place to photograph a child than in their comfort zone? All four of the children's personalities just shine right through this portrait. Just as soon as the camera study was finished, they all ran off to play! What a fun evening!
